Trinidad Cuesta: A Life Between Spirituality and Art

Stepping into Trinidad Cuesta’s workshop in Mexico City, it’s impossible not to feel enveloped by a universe that seamlessly combines authenticity and intensity.

Every corner speaks of a woman who lives and breathes art. A painter, designer, and lover of aesthetics in all its forms, Trinidad doesn’t just create art—she inhabits it. “I started painting recently, but this fantastical world has always been with me,” she shares, wearing her signature red hat that has become her personal emblem. For her, this accessory is not just an object; it’s an elegant and functional sculpture, an extension of herself that transports her to a surreal world where life is a game not to be taken too seriously.

Born in Chile, Trinidad carries the richness of her homeland in the way she creates and perceives the world. "I have always been intense and authentic, and that is reflected in everything I do," she says. Her Chilean heritage seems to merge with the cultures of the places she has lived, especially Mexico, where she has found a creative home that resonates deeply with her essence.

For Trinidad, hats are both a tool for experimentation and a form of personal scenography. Each piece is an ode to history and craftsmanship, shaped by hand and steam in a process she describes as romantic and nostalgic.

But Trinidad doesn’t stop at hats when it comes to finding her voice. Her recent foray into painting has resulted in a series titled "Un grito a mis necesidades" (A Cry for My Needs), a body of work rich in symbolism. "I write each painting before I bring it to life," she explains. Through her notebook, she collects fragments from dreams, walks, readings, and her practices in meditation and breath work. Each painting is an illusory tale that seeks to heal, weaving together emotions, spirituality, and the physical body in a delicate balance.

Her life is marked by two territories that spark her creativity: Mexico and India. “Both places possess a raw realism that simultaneously transforms into an astonishing fantasy,” she describes. For her, the markets, streets, and daily life of these countries are a hallucination filled with symbols. "They make me feel that life is both totality and absence, a constant cycle of birth and death."

Though she feels deeply connected to Mexico, the contrast of her Chilean roots and her fascination with India adds layers to her personal narrative. Trinidad reflects this duality in her work, blending textures, colors, and daring forms that speak of ever-evolving worlds.
For Trinidad, art is not merely a means of expression; it is a tool for healing. "The arts nourish my soul and connect me to my life’s purpose," she says.

Both her hats and her paintings, as Trinidad puts it, are a conversation between colors and forms that defy conventional aesthetic rules. Looking at them, it’s clear that her work not only reflects her inner world but also invites others to explore their own.

With an indomitable spirit and a deeply spiritual approach, Trinidad Cuesta reminds us that art is not only created—it is lived, breathed, and, above all, felt. Her Chilean perspective, enriched by her experiences in Mexico and India, gives her a unique voice in the world of contemporary art.
